What to pack for a holiday to Victoria Falls

Do you need some advice about what to pack for holiday to Victoria Falls? Here's our suggested list.
  • A passport which is valid for 6 months and which has at least two empty pages. Take a photo of your passport and keep a copy on you and maybe a spare in the cloud or at home.
  • USD cash if you need to buy a visa on arrival. There are credit card machines for this at the airport, but... sometimes these can go on the blink. .  Even better - If you don't want to queue for a visa on arrival then get your visa before you arrive.
  • Good quality sunglasses
  • Sun hat - essential
  • High factor suntan lotion. (Water resistant is best if you are planning to go rafting or visiting the Falls rainforest) and an after sun skin cooler if you are prone to sunburn.
  • Casual day clothes such as T-shirts & shorts. Vic Falls and Livingstone are casual places and mostly shorts and T's are the rule. Some lodges/hotels (such as the Livingstone Room at the Victoria Falls Hotel) have a smart-casual dress code for evening. A long sleeve shirt is useful for both covering up from the sun and as something light to put on when temperatures cool.
  • Warm clothes for the winter months (May to August) such as a beanie, scarf, warm jacket and gloves.  The days are warm but nights can be be very cool. A few light layers are best so that you can peel off as the day warms up.
  • Comfortable walking shoes (running/tennis shoes are fine)
  • Thongs/flip flops. Plastic or rubber shoes such as Hi-Tecs or are very useful when rafting and for visiting the rainforest as in high water months your shoes (and your clothes) will get wet!
  • A couple of plastic bags such as shopping bags. We find these particularly useful for transporting wet shoes or clothes.
  • Light rain gear for summer months (late November to April)
  • Swimming costume
  • If you are planning to go rafting we recommend long shorts such as board shorts to prevent your knees from burning in the sun.
  • Camera equipment
  • Phones, laptops & tablets: Roaming charges are still pretty darn exorbitant but Vic Falls and Livingstone are fully connected and most places offer wifi.
  • South African travellers should take a an international plug converter as both Zimbabwe and Zambia have square pin plugs
  • If you wear contact lenses, we recommend that you bring along a pair of glasses. If you plan on doing white river rafting. A bungy cord to keep your glasses on whilst rafting is useful
  • Binoculars and a Newman’s bird book (The app is pretty fantastic too) if you are keen birders.
  • Personal toiletries. Many of the bigger hotels offer basic toiletries such as shampoo, body lotion and insect repellant
  • Personal medication. Carry a copy of your script if you are taking and carrying chronic meds.
  • Malaria tablets
  • Mask!
  • Basic medical kit such as headache tablets, anti-histamine cream, Imodium
  • Insect repellent eg Tabard, Rid, Jungle Juice, etc
  • Money: we find small denominations of USD the most useful to travel with for tips etc.
  • A flashlight (torch). Please take spare batteries
  • Pens for filling out forms at passport controls
  • A sense of humour and adventure – This is Africa !
